this kid

I put on my running music to listen to while I was cleaning up and Alaina immediately ran down stairs to get her "dancing thing" on (tutu). I thought that was pretty cute, but that's not the point of this post.

During my tidying up, and as I was making her bed I discovered I have one of those kids. The kind of kid that always has her finger up her nose. But what's more, is that she is also one of those kids who apparently likes to wipe her boogers on the wall next to her bed.

Here she is smiling proudly next to her collection. When I told her to please stop wiping her boogers on the wall and come get a Kleenex in the future, and when I told her it was gross, she just laughed and said, "it's not gross, it's yummy!"

Oddly enough, she isn't a booger eater. Let's hope it stays that way.

Oh, this kid makes me laugh, even when she is gross.

Yep, I just blogged about boogers. This is our life.

happy moments

Amidst all the frustrations of parenthood, come those sweet moments that make my heart feel happy. Today, those moments occurred as my husband came home, and took a whining toddler out to swing on the swing. I love watching out the window and seeing the sheer delight on her face.

Another moment is watching your toddler become more independent all the time, including when she decides to change out of her jeans and into pajama bottoms and church shoes to go play outside.

It's when we catch caterpillars and put them in a jar and wait to see if they build cocoons and turn into butterflies...(and hope that they don't die in the meantime)

What's even better is when Katelyn was calling them "callapitters". I loved it, but sadly, she has figured out how to say it correctly. Oh well.

These warm spring days are like medicine to my soul!

Katelyn insisted her hair be in her face for this picture.

What will happen.....?

Easter 2012

We had a nice Easter. The Easter Bunny was EXTREMELY generous with the girls this year. Thank goodness for "him" (wink, wink). My mom and Dale were here for the weekend. We had a pancake breakfast and a Ham dinner. It was all very delicious and I feel very fat today.

We had a beautiful, warm, sunny day. Got to attend great church meetings. The girls were a vision of spring in their Easter skirts. My sister in law, Sarah, showed me a really easy pattern to make these skirts. So easy, even I could make them with no real sewing skills. Katelyn picked out the fabric. Such pretty little girls. After our dinner, we enjoyed a nice evening walk around the neighborhood.

Happy Easter to All!

I'm crazy about...

Alaina!

From very, very early on in Alaina's life she has made me laugh. Even as a baby. I thought to myself, that she would be our "funny" kid. She has continued to live up to that impression.

She has been in that stage that falls somewhere in between baby and big girl
, for a while now. I sort of just want to keep her in that spot for a while longer. That spot where it's still kind of cute when she tells me "no". The spot where you can't exactly force her to eat her vegetables...cause she still too young. The spot that her cheeks are still so round and pudgy you could just bite em'.

She has the best facial expressions. She is funny, but what's even greater, is that she knows when she is being funny and sometimes actually tries to make you laugh. I love this about her.

I love how she still waddles a little when she walks. I love how she tries to run. I love her lisp, even though I hope she eventually outgrows it. I love her bright eyes.

I love the sound of her cute little voice.

She came into this world with a fierce determination and has given us so much joy every day since. Stay sweet little girl!

how to make a collage

Finally learned how to make a collage. Thanks to this tutorial.
It's only taken me a year or so to figure it out.

Today. I "enjoyed" them. Truly.

sister love

Last night we put the girls to bed and Alaina was still protesting, as she normally does, after we left the room. I was standing outside the door when I heard Katelyn say, "Alaina, do you want me to sing some songs to you?" Alaina agreed and Katelyn began singing "Jingle Bells". Soon enough, both were quiet and asleep.

It melted my heart. What sweet girls.

fun times and memorable moments

Katelyn got to invite a few friends over tonight for a movie night. It was so cute to see how excited they all were. What made it even better is that before the friends came over we wrote all their names on a paper bag for their popcorn. When I wrote Alaina's name on a bag, Katelyn said, "that's right, cuz Alaina is my friend too." Ahhhh, these are the moments that make all those other moments seem bearable.

I definitely try to teach her/them that sisters are friends too and can be even the best friends that they will ever have in life. I told Katelyn that it made me really happy to hear her say that.

Kindergarten field trip-Country Mercantile

Katelyn's 1st field trip:
She got to ride the SCHOOL BUS, which she was a little nervous
about, but decided that the bus was so much fun!

We went out to the Country Mercantile for the annual pumpkin pick.
We get to go on a fun tractor-pulled hay ride out to the patch and choose
whatever little pumpkin their hearts desire.
They also get to climb the hay pyramid, go through the hay maze
and then stop by the petting zoo.

So nice that siblings and parents can come too.

I love the sister-love

kids

My kids are running around nude (well, the oldest only has underpants on). Katelyn is mixing up some sweet lyrics while showing Alaina the latest and greatest dance moves. Dad's gone at the hockey game so I figure, heck, you can only get away with running around nude for so many years. Party on girls!

Alaina is 2

Good Morning!

birthday snuggles (or "nuggles") with big sister

We had a super low-key day and then I made an apple pie with a crumb top
for her birthday dessert. She wore her birthday hair all day.
We love you kiddo!

Our Alaina

On the eve of miss Alaina's 2nd birthday, I think it would be fun to revisit her birth story and one of the most incredible experiences I have ever been through. Enjoy!

Alaina’s Birth Story

Tuesday September 1, 2009

The day started out like most of the other days leading up to it. I had already given my Dad a hard time for “cursing” me. He really wanted me to have the baby in September, rather than August because we have so many birthdays and anniversaries already in August. Justin was at work and I stayed home with Dean and Joyce. They were helping can peaches that day. I guess they weren’t really “helping”, they were doing all of it and I sort of watched and asked questions here and there. I made a nectarine pie earlier in the day and was really looking forward to eating it after dinner. I felt pretty low key the whole day. I was trying to remain relaxed and patient as we waited for the baby to come. I was feeling somewhat restless though, and I was able to get some dusting done. Just after 6pm, I decided to go lay down on the bed for a little while. As I was laying there, I started to have some contractions, but they didn’t seem to be a big deal and weren’t painful. I had been having contractions like this on and off for several days now and decided not to get too excited about it. Besides, they didn’t last or progress, so no big deal.
Justin worked late that night and I was still resting when he got home. My mother in law made dinner and I came out to eat around 8pm or so. After dinner, I completely indulged in some nectarine pie and vanilla ice cream, having a little more than I should.
Sarah had done some acupressure on my ankles earlier in the evening and she was encouraging Justin and I to take another walk after dinner. We left the house around 9pm and as we were leaving, Katelyn came running out crying. She wanted to come on the walk too and it just about broke my heart seeing her upset and running to us. She was probably wondering what we were doing and why she was being left out this time. We like to go on walks as a family.
We didn’t go on a very long walk, but we found one small hill to go up. Katelyn got tired after walking up the hill and wanted Justin to carry her back. She fell asleep on his shoulder-it was really sweet. On the way back to the house Justin said to me, “you know, this might be the last walk we take as just a family of three.”
We got Katelyn to bed and decided we would try a few more “at home” induction techniques. I hardly had a chance to fall asleep when I felt my first contraction. I looked at the clock and it said 11:11pm. It was a fairly strong contraction, so I decided to pay attention and see what would happen. About 9 minutes later, I had another one. These were a lot stronger than the contractions I had previously been having and I wasn’t able to try and sleep through them. I decided to change into my “labor clothes”, managed to put some fresh deodorant on and just started walking around trying to breathe through the contractions. I started writing them down as they came. Here is what it looked like:

Contraction:
11:11pm
(9 min)
11:20pm
(6 min)
11:26pm
(5 min)
11:31pm
(4 min)
11:35pm
(contraction while on the toilet)
11:41pm
(3 min)
11:44pm
(2 min)
11:46pm
I Stopped keeping track after that.

I could not believe how strong the contractions were. I called Amanda, my Doula at 11:52pm. I told her I was going to try and stay at home for a while and she told me she’d be here in an hour. I really didn’t want to wake Justin up because he had been up since 4 am and had just barely gone to bed. I did go in and tell him that it was happening though. However, he has no recollection of that. After I called Amanda, I went down to tell Sarah that things had started and she came out to help me. I had been trying to use the breathing techniques I had been practicing, but it wasn’t working very well. I could not sit still. I had to keep walking or rocking. I tried to sit on the birth ball, but it was really uncomfortable. The contractions were getting more and more intense and I started thinking to myself that there was no way I was going to make it several more hours like this without any pain medication.

I started to feel sick to my stomach and went in the bathroom. I had pooped about three times already, which I was happy about because I really don’t like to do it while I am pushing. I threw up big time. That nectarine pie wasn’t so good the second time around. Sarah came to check on me and I told her to go get Justin up. He came down to see if he could help and turned the bathroom fan on right away. He asked if I was ok and I told him, “no! we need to go!” I asked him to bring me the phone so I could call my mom and then he went upstairs to get our bag and get some clothes on. My mom answered and sounded like she didn’t know who I was, which admittedly, kind of annoyed me at the time. Like who else would be calling in the middle of the night. I couldn’t talk because another contraction was coming on and I put the phone down and told Sarah to “tell her”. Apparently my mom didn’t hear me say, “hold on” and they got disconnected (I think). Eventually she got the message. It was about 12:15am when I called her. Justin was about ready and got the car started. Sarah was trying to get Audrey’s things together to take her out to my mother in law in the trailer. I remember saying to Justin, “screw the birth plan.” I had to go to the bathroom again and went upstairs. I was having another major contraction and suddenly I felt my body bearing down. I think I was in shock and I called for Sarah and told her, “I think I’m pushing, I think I’m pushing! We have to go, we have to go now!” I tried to breathe. I wiped off and saw some thick blood. I grabbed a towel and headed out to the car. The cool night air felt so good to me. I threw to towel on the seat and got in the car. Justin was close behind and I started having more contractions along with the urge to push. I became very vocal at this point. I think I may have howled as we backed out of the driveway and went over some bumps. I was so thankful that Justin wasn’t poking along. Things got crazy at this point. With every contraction, my body was pushing. I felt my water break in the car. I absolutely felt zero control over what was happening. I was yelling and screaming and telling Justin, “I’m pushing, I’m pushing!” I heard him floor the gas pedal. Luckily under normal circumstances, the hospital is only about 10 minutes away. I believe the clock in the car said 12:26am when we left the house. Justin remained very calm, but drove fast. I seriously was howling and hollering and screaming with each contraction. I could not believe what was happening. I was trying to breathe fast and keep my chin up like I remembered hearing you were supposed to do if you were trying not to push. Nothing was working though. I kept screaming, telling Justin, “hurry! I’m pushing, I’m pushing! She’s going to come out, she’s gonna come out!” He got on the phone and called 911 to let them know what was going on. I swear they were asking a million questions and I was getting a little annoyed. Couldn’t they hear me screaming in the background. We were a few blocks from the hospital and I was very worried that this baby was going to come out in the car. Justin was great. He was holding my hand and saying, “don’t push, don’t push, you’re doing great!” I felt slightly hysterical at this point. I yelled some more. “She’s coming out, I can feel the burning, I can feel the burning!” They were waiting for us at the ER entrance with a bed. They tried to help me out, but I could hardly move. I managed to get on the bed and continued howling and yelling the whole time. I lost a shoe getting on the bed. I remember saying, “help me, help me! She’s coming out, she’s coming out!” They ran me down the hallways (luckily it is a smaller hospital), and I was yelling the whole time, like a mad woman. I saw one woman come out into the doorway of one room. I could not help myself. I was telling the medical staff, “I’m sorry, I’m so sorry, I never thought I’d behave this way.” On the way into the room, I said, “can I get a shot of something?” I don’t think anyone heard me or answered me. They managed to get me onto the delivery bed, take my pants off etc. My body just felt rigid. I was grabbing the bed rails with all my might. At some point Justin made it into the room. He tried getting me to grab his hands, but I wanted to bed rails. He was cute. I remember him asking if I wanted the music. HA! I declined. The staff was telling me to bend my legs and don’t be scared. One of the nurses only managed to get one glove on and another one’s glove was all crooked and had some fingers in the wrongs spots and some fingers not in any spots. I got my legs back and my body kept pushing. It felt like the baby was coming out of my crotch and a huge turd was coming out of my butt. It hurt. I felt more burning and pressure, but there was nothing I could do. There was not one push during the entire process that was of my own will or choice. I could not believe what I was feeling. Her head came out and I felt some relief, then some more burning and her body was out, then more relief. Alaina was born at 12:40 am. She was delivered by Dr. Brooks. We barely made it into the hospital room and it was the most horrifying, intense, exciting, exhilarating, coolest, most amazing experience that has ever happened to me. I got the natural birth I was hoping for, just not nearly in the way I had imagined. So much for all that practicing. I felt so bad for Sarah and Amanda, who along with my midwife, missed the birth. But it was incredible. Total scene out a movie, type birth story. All of it true. We have a beautiful, healthy girl and are so happy.

my daughters

I love this picture that I took of Alaina today. She is taking care of her baby by wiping it's bum. She did this not too long after I had changed her diaper.

It's moments like these that cause me to reflect on my role as a mother. It seems so innocent and cute how she is mimicking what I do for her, but it makes me ponder the even bigger picture. She is a mommy in training. And that is not an insignificant thing.

I struggle a lot with feelings of being inadequate at mothering. Just the other day I told someone that "I'm not a natural mother". I guess I don't know what I really mean by saying that, I just don't feel like I am doing that great of a job most of the time...maybe not most of the time, but often. I was never the girl who dreamed of nothing but being a mother and having babies. I always figured I would, but it intimidated me more than excited me. And now that I am here, I feel the pressure.

Being a good...no, great mom is something I think about often. I still search for what it means though...to be a great mom-to my girls specifically. It could mean something very different to each of my children. And what I think would make me a great mom, and how I act on that interpretation, may not be the same as what my children's definition or interpretation may be. Does that make sense?

I think it means being selfless. I mean really, truly selfless. I can think of a million ways that I am NOT that. But I know what I need to work on and that's a start. There are so many things pulling my attention in all kinds of directions. Some, are worth nothing and their cost is a price I do not want to pay.

It occurred to me recently that one way I might go about achieving this is to think of myself as teaching my daughters how to be what I think would be a great mom. It helps me to focus on what I am doing, or in many cases, not doing-and to think about how my actions and words are teaching them what kind of mom to be.

I think this has occurred to me as I listen to how Katelyn speaks to Alaina. Thankfully, there are many more sweet, kind and loving moments where Katelyn is a great older sister, but there are also times when I hear a distinct imitation of me, and it makes me cringe.

I know I won't always be perfect, but I will keep fighting against myself and my weaknesses so that I can hopefully be an influence for good in the lives of my "mommies in training".

little stinker

Oh my child...

Saturday, after our getaway at the Mansion, we picked up the girls and drove over to Roslyn, WA to my brother and sister in law's home for two nights. They blessed their newest addition, Claire on Sunday (I should probably do a post about that).

Monday morning we were all getting ready to head over to Spokane so Justin and Corey could help Sarah's dad build a carport. Alaina came around rubbing at her nose and acting as if something was bothering her nose. I tried to get a look, but she wasn't too happy with me. I thought I felt something hard from the outside of her nose, but she just started crying and trying to escape me every time I tried. Corey tried to have a look, but didn't see anything. She seemed fine enough, so we left and I told myself I would just keep an eye on it. I was still skeptical.

Last night I was holding her while she slept in my arms and I could hear something was obstructing the air in her left nostril. As my husband will tell you, I am a "picker", so this was really bothering me, and I was feeling slightly obsessed about clearing her nasal passage, but I wasn't about to disturb her sleep.

My mom told me she cleared some "stuff" from Alaina's nose today, but at bedtime, I took another look and got out the q-tips. I could feel something hard up there and it was high time to get it out, whatever it was! I decided to grab a flashlight and sure enough, there was a green bead of some sort stuck in there. I knew it! I KNEW IT! Luckily I still have a dental instrument from my working days and was able to snatch it out just like that. My poor baby. I just have a feeling that with Alaina we will probably see many, many more instances like this throughout the course of her life. There's just something about her personality...she makes me laugh.

future runner???

She's so fast, she's a blur!

4.19.2011

it has begun

Alaina has started showing an interest in the toilet, so last night we pulled
out the potty chair to let her try it out. She is IN LOVE!

Completely obsessed with it and has peed in it twice already....
this is a good thing!

big girl

This last week Alaina turned 18 months old! She is officially old enough to go to Nursery at church and absolutely loves to go. I really enjoy this age. She is still part baby, but becoming more independent all the time. Sometimes I just don't want them to grow up...

Alaina's all time favorite activity is looking at books and having the stories read to her. She can go through book, after book, after book. The other thing she seems to really love is stuffed animals and is starting to get into dolls. She loves to hold them tight in the crook of her little chubby arm. I think it's adorable.

Her communication and language skills are improving all the time and she is starting to repeat a lot of different things:

Mama (she still mostly calls Justin mama too), water, bottle, boy, baby, love, dog, and lets not forget "MINE!" (everything is hers). The words don't always come out exactly right, but she is making good progress.

She is a pretty happy and easy going toddler, but she can throw a pretty impressive tantrum at times too. I was looking back through some pictures tonight and just love the pictures of our sweet new baby. It was such a special time.
