canning

Yesterday I spent the e n t i r e day (practically) canning peaches.
Supposedly, it's cost effective, but I am not so sure about efficiency of time.
Is it really, truly worth it to spend all that time?
It was quite a process. Not hard, just time consuming.

My neighbor, Trina joined me.

41 lbs = 3 pints and 19 quarts of peaches.

$38 for this batch (not the best price), but don't you think I could buy
38 cans of peaches at the store for just as much??? I don't know for sure.
Just wondering.
I know they don't taste quite the same and you don't get the joy of
preserving your own food. I'm just thinking logistics right now.

Give me your best arguments (in my comment box)

Same thoughts run through my head! But when I think about it, a can of peaches costs maybe $1.40 or so, and the can is a lot smaller...

Do you hear me trying to convince myself? We'll see you in Yakima this later week to buy some produce to can, hahahahaha!

I have this same inner battle every year. Especially this year, since I am working and don't have as much time to can. For me, it is worth it. The cost savings, maybe not. But the joy is totally worth it. And the fact that my kids know exactly where we get our food, and that they love it is worth it.

I love it too because I spend the time for one day, and have enough peaches for a year. IT makes me feel secure. :)

It just makes me feel more domestic. It makes me appreciate what others have done before to preserve food. It's neat doing what my grandparents and my parents have done in the past. I agree, it is time consuming.
